The SEC requires 13F filings within 45 calendar days of each quarter-end. If the 45th day falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.
For example, Q4 2025 ended on December 31, 2025. Forty-five days later is February 14, 2026, a Saturday. The deadline shifted to Monday, February 17, 2026 (also Presidents' Day, but SEC accepts electronic filings on holidays).
Most filings arrive in the final 72 hours before the deadline. The highest-profile filers (Berkshire Hathaway, Bridgewater, Soros Fund Management) typically file on the deadline day itself, generating the most media coverage.

Funds can request confidential treatment (CT) for specific positions they don't want disclosed immediately, typically because they are still building or exiting a large position. CT requests delay disclosure for up to one year, after which the SEC releases the information retroactively.
This means some positions may appear in a fund's portfolio months after they were initially established. Track13F retroactively incorporates CT releases when they become public.
Common questions about 13F filing deadlines.
The next deadline is May 15, 2026 for Q1 2026 holdings (covering January 1 - March 31, 2026). Filings are due 45 calendar days after each quarter-end.
The SEC can issue a deficiency notice and, in serious cases, refer late filers for enforcement action. In practice, most major funds file on time. Small delays of a few days are common and rarely penalized.
There is no formal extension process for 13F filings. However, funds can request confidential treatment for specific positions, which allows them to delay disclosure of those holdings for up to one year.
Most large, well-known funds (Berkshire, Bridgewater, etc.) file on or very close to the deadline. Smaller filers often submit earlier. The heaviest filing volume occurs in the 48 hours before each deadline.
